Life of Pi at Ahmanson Theatre

Many people know the story of Life of Pi because of the film. Director Ang Lee and his team did an incredible job crafting the movie with the source material, which comes from the novel by Yann Martel. Martel actually helped with the playwright for Life of Pi the Musical along with expert theater writer Lolita Chakrabarti. This is relevant because it means this version grasps the essence of the story, even in this new format. There are two ideas that are in play throughout the story. It's mainly about Pi's quest for actual survival, while trying not to lose his mind in the process. This allows the story to gravitate from his conscious to his subconscious mind. The storyline is so mind-blowing, and yet it doesn't scare people away because until you're completely emerged in the plot, you realize how complicated it is.

This musical is relatively recent; the first-ever official performance took place in 2019. Since then, it has filled theaters all over the UK, while also having a long run in London's West End before heading to Broadway. It's picked up recognition from fans and esteemed theater award shows in the process. Life of Pi is headed to the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, California as a way to get more people to know the story. Since it's not a musical that's been around for too long, there's a good chance that you've never been at a theater to see it. The puppet design is like nothing Broadway had ever seen before. Another major part of the show is the lighting and the stage design; everything works like clockwork to bring forth an amazing story.

Being too close to the stage on this Saturday night may backfire on you. Looking into elevated seats or spots in the middle or back rows could be a better option.
