Life of Pi at Ahmanson Theatre

The majority of folks know the story of Life of Pi through the movie. Director Ang Lee and his team did a fabulous job adapting the source material, which comes from a novel by Yann Martel. Martel actually helped with the playwright for this musical along with premier theater writer Lolita Chakrabarti. This is important because it means Life of Pi the Musical captures the essence of the story, even in this new format. There are two elements that generate the tension throughout the show. It's mainly about Pi's journey for actual survival, while trying not to lose his mind in the process. This allows the story to shift from his conscious to his subconscious mind. The story arch is so mind-blowing, and yet it doesn't scare people away because until you're waist-deep into the plot, you realize how tricky it is.

This musical is rather new; the first-ever official performance was in 2019. Since then, it has filled theaters all around the UK, while also having an extensive run in London's West End before heading to Broadway. It's picked up applause from fans and esteemed theater award shows in the process. Life of Pi is headed to the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, California in an effort to get more people to experience the story. Since it's not a play that's been on display for too long, there's a good chance that you've never been at a theater to see it. If you come out on this Thursday 29th May 2025, you're going to be in for a treat. It's not only a musical that forces you to reflect on what you'll see on stage. The puppet design is like nothing Broadway had ever seen before. Another essential part of the show is the lighting and the stage design; everything works like clockwork to bring forth a memorable story.

Since both the actors and the stage itself are essential to the understanding the story, finding the right spot to take it all in is key to the whole experience.
